Maria of Alexandria, a revered alchemist from the second century AD, lived in a time when scientists, regardless of gender, were given ample opportunities. Although her own writings have been lost, later alchemists have quoted her with great respect. She invented several technical devices still in use today such as the distillation apparatus and the bain-marie. She also voiced theories about spiritual matters.

In those centuries, alchemy had two meanings: chemistry or the study of matter, and gnosis or the study of inner processes. Matter and spirit were seen as one. ‘From one comes two, from two comes three and from the third comes the one as the fourth’, is her Axiom. Centuries later, Carl Jung used this as the basis for his theory on wholeness and individuation.

Maria the alchemist would like to remind you that progress in the development of the soul does not show a clear or tangible upward trend, but rather a division of parts into the light and parts that fall into the (unconscious) shadow. The soul leads us to experiences that help us grow, however not always in a harmonious manner. The soul needs contrast to balance itself out. At times you have to experience what does not align with your values, find yourself in an unsuitable role or fall back into something that disappoints you. But this growth process culminates in wholeness – in feeling part of the indivisible one, the untouchable, ethereal and eternal nature of the soul – the quinta essentia.

This card implies that you are receiving more and more glimpses of the consciousness of oneness, also known as the Christ consciousness, and that you are embarking on the path of the soul. It means detaching yourself from people, situations and patterns that no longer serve you, transforming your own shadow aspects by shining the light of consciousness upon them and prioritising the soul’s desires over those of the ego. As an alchemist, Maria can assure you that you will turn your lead into gold.
