In ancient traditions across the world, water symbolises the west, emotions, intuition, reflection, empathy and sympathy. It embodies the power of feeling. Emotions are fluid; they cannot be grasped, just as water cannot be. Do not confuse emotions with intuition, do not identify with them overly and, above all, do not sanctify them. Let emotions flow through you like water that you drink and then release: consciously feel what there is to feel so that you ride the wave and do not end up being submerged by it. Feelings are not meant to be revisited and dwelled upon, but neither should they be avoided.
Our society aims to avoid, dampen or outsmart unpleasant feelings so that we can continue to function and consume as efficiently as possible. Feelings do not accept this premise; they want what they arose for – to be felt. You can handle them, truly, you will not be destroyed by them or elevated. Just keep breathing. Only when they feel seen and understood will they leave, satisfied.
Emotions in their purest form are messengers, even the most childish, touchy or overenthusiastic ones. They convey honest information about how you relate to something, not how you would like to relate to it. You do not need to be more or less enlightened than you are because that will set you back, but always be careful how, when, and to whom you express your emotions, because that is where impurities can arise.
Water encourages you to explore your emotions around this issue. Feel the place in your body where the sensation is located, place your hand on it and breathe towards it. Let it fill you completely. Stay with it, do not suppress it and see if any images or words come to mind that bring more understanding. Express the feeling: cry, laugh, sing, dance, draw, write and then wave goodbye as if it were an unexpected visitor on a Sunday morning, relieved, freer and wiser.
